Yet more stupid insurance statistics we can live without

If companies are looking for cuts to give customers cheap insurance cover, then top of the chops should be the staff that supply stupid statistics for press releases.

Day after day, insurance companies release facts and figures aimed at catching the headlines for some free publicity.

However, some of the topics are blatantly desperate attempts to grab the headlines from hapless PR hacks grasping at straws to attract the attention of  busy journalists.

The other day, the top 10 post codes for pet road accidents had the potential to plunge in to obscurity, but for the fact  that most of the crashes were in a fraction of the number of the 200 or so post code regions in the country.

Unfortunately, the stupid statistic of the week comes from Esure, who have paid someone to crunch the numbers about the amount of time everyone spends every day looking for lost stuff.

Unbelievably, the company employed a market research company to ask 3,000 people this big question of the moment.

Quite frankly, who cares?

The conclusion – keep an eye on where you put things to avoid wasting time looking for them.

This gem of wisdom accompanied the press release from Nikki Sellers, head of home insurance at Esure: “Most Brits blame their bad luck or a hectic lifestyle for constantly misplacing items or even losing them completely.”

Apparently this links back to home insurance and unnecessary claims customers make for replacing stuff that’s not really lost, merely temporarily unavailable.

These precious things, listed in order of what goes missing most, are mobile phones, house keys, car keys, paperwork, spectacles and sun glasses, a wallet or purse, lip balms and hairbrushes.

Hardly much there to make a claim about.

The Insurance Blogger dreads to think how much the company spent on mining these nuggets of non-information, and no doubt the cost is passed on to customers through their insurance premiums.
